| | Dear friends and partners of the Peace Palace,
It has been an exceptional and challenging year. But even though this week we had to close our Library and the Visitors Centre again due to the Covid pandemic, we can end this year with good news:
Our Visitors Centre fastly adapted to the new customer demands and created interactive online guided tours. We have been able to welcome a variety of virtual groups and created a tailor-made evening tour offered to a group of 150 people from the Asia - Pacific region. Thus we have made a virtue out of necessity and limitations turned into new dimensions. Our reach is wider than ever and more widely available upon demand.
The economic impact of the Peace Palace is also global. A recent study shows that the Courts contribute very positively to the international economy. By solving conflicts in the courtroom, they help avoiding billions of damage and loss as a result of warfare. Even on a national level, the Peace Palace has a positive impact on the economy: It accounts for more than 720 jobs (of which 229 within the Palace) and contributing an added value of 70 million euros to the Dutch GDP.
2020 also marked the 75th anniversary of the United Nations which was celebrated with live streamed online events and a TV show from the Peace Palace. We also commemorated 75 years since the end of World War II which reminded us how grateful we can actually be in this day and age, despite the impact of Covid-19 on our daily life.
However, living in peace and security is not a given for everyone, therefore we have a lot of work ahead of us. And we need your support to promote peace. As we cannot meet live, since our new years reception obviously cannot take place under the current circumstances, I would be very grateful if you could take the time to visit our website and find out how you can support our activities in terms of dialogue, culture and education.
I wish you peaceful holidays and a good start into 2021, a year that looks more promising in many ways. But above all: Good health!
