| | Dear friends and partners of the Peace Palace,
The tree in front of the Peace Palace is again brightly lit. Although most of 2021 was marked by the impact of the pandemic, we definitely saw some bright spots:
Both the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration continued to hold their hearings and sessions, albeit in hybrid format, thus securing peace through law in various cases. The Hague Academy offered both winter and summer courses online, for an even larger audience of future judges, arbitrators and diplomats than ever before. Also, both the Library and the Visitors Center of the Peace Palace were open to outside visitors for most of the year, although on a limited basis.
The awarding of the 2021 Youth Carnegie Peace Prize could finally take place and showed how many young and committed peacebuilders are working worldwide for dialogue and a peaceful future. Furthermore, the viewing of the film Hunger Ward by UN OCHA, on Yemen, and the awarding of the Max Van der Stoel Award by the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the OCSE were moving events. Personally, I was also very impressed by the visit of Lida Engelsman who, despite her terrible experiences during the Holocaust, has not lost her hope. Hope that the next generation will do better. In return, she was truly grateful that the horrors of war that she experienced, were prevented or mitigated for so many others through the cases brought before the Courts in the Peace Palace.
We wish that the idea of a peaceful society, for which the palace was built, will come to the fore again during the holiday season.
I wish you happy holidays and for the next year health and peace,
With kind regards,
Erik de Baedts Director Carnegie Foundation - Peace Palace |
