| | Dear friends and partners of the Peace Palace,
“The Purposes of the United Nations are to maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace” starts the Charter of the United Nations.
When the Peace Palace opened its doors in 1913, it was with the same basic idea: to solve conflicts peacefully in the courtroom by arbitration. Later jurisdiction was added as another means to the same end. The motto of the Peace Palace has always been and will remain “Peace through Law”.
Especially in these times with armed conflicts, it’s necessary to reflect, learn from history, stick to the principles and advocate for peace through justice. The Peace Palace is a neutral place open to parties seeking justice. We are grateful that in a conflict such as between Ukraine and Russia, the Peace Palace can be a crucial place once more. With a significant number of cases before both the courts, the ICJ and the PCA, parties are generally willing to settle their conflicts peacefully. Unfortunately, not all conflicts can be resolved yet.
Our hope is therefore also directed to the future. The Summer Courses of The Hague Academy are fully booked, which means that tomorrow's diplomats and lawyers will be trained again at the Peace Palace to practice "Peace through Law" in the future.
All of this shows us that, while one cannot take peace for granted, we can work towards peace and bring the inspiration forward!
With kind regards,
Erik de Baedts Director Carnegie Foundation - Peace Palace |
